Considering Using AI for Your Logo?

Starting a business today is easier than it has ever been. Tools like Canva, AI generators, and website builders mean you can go from idea to launch in a matter of days. But having access to powerful tools doesn’t always mean we know how to use them well. One place I’m seeing this show up more and more is in AI-generated logos.

One of the trends I have noticed is that many businesses are using AI to get over the significant hurdle of creating a logo for their business. Though this can be a good solution, particularly at the start of your business, it’s important to understand the shortcomings of using AI-generated logos.

Primarily, I have not seen one with a strong design. As a graphic designer by trade, this is the largest issue for me. To illustrate the types of issues I commonly encounter with AI-generated logos, here are several examples of logos designed using AI-generators:

Here are some design issues of AI-generated logos:

1. Too many elements.

This is the number one offense of AI-generated logos in my opinion. There’s too much going on and some of the elements do not have an obvious connection to the business.

2. Too many colors.

A Logo should ideally include three or fewer (You’ll thank me when you go to buy screen-printed shirts!).

3. Can’t be simplified to black and white.

This is a good test of strong design. Also a practical need for businesses who may still have to use a logo in this most simplified form (as a watermark or via fax).

4. Incorrect spelling and other obvious mistakes.

Even if this is something that can easily be edited in the AI tool, it’s just another sign that there’s not a thoughtful human on the other side of this design.

5. Literal interpretation of business in visual form.

Although this works well in some cases, it’s not ideal for most businesses.

6. It will not scale well.

It may look ok on a website, but on a pen or business card it will be impossible to read (not enough contrast, too much detail).

7. They don’t have a clear focal point.

Again, this has to do with the overall design.

8. Not having high-quality or vector-based files.

I’ve worked with many clients who have been using a logo they built using AI, but I end up having to rebuild the logo so they are able to have files that work well.

Another significant shortcoming of AI-generated logos is the inability to claim copyright ownership and limitations on registering the mark. Please touch base with an IP Lawyer for details. The Business Insight Center can also be a great local resource for business owners in Rochester, NY.

Ultimately, while tools like AI logo generators can help you get started quickly, they can’t replace the experience of working with a human designer who brings both technical skill and thoughtful collaboration to the process. A designer doesn’t just produce a graphic, they listen to your goals, understand your audience, and translate the heart of your business into a visual identity that is intentional, flexible, and built to last. Through conversation, strategy, and trained design judgment, a human designer can create a brand that communicates clearly, scales across platforms, and truly reflects the unique story of your business in a way that automated tools simply can’t replicate.

Logo Litmus Test

1. Turn your logo black and white.

In Canva, edit the image and change the saturation to “0.”

Evaluate: Does the design still hold?

2. Scale-test your logo.

Using Mock-ups in Canva, add your logo to a few different-sized objects.

Evaluate: How do they look?

3. Check to see if you have vector-based files for your logo (svg, eps, pdf).

These are the file types that would be needed to have your logo on a large sign or billboard without losing quality.
